120. Tips for prospective travellers. Plan your itinerary properly

Oct 31, 2012

Hi

Pl copy, paste and edit my proposed itinerary and include your choice of hotels and preferences inside the itinerary. E.g. insert the names of towns you prefer to visit.

Then, email to me your edited itinerary and I can proceed to get quotation from there. In this way, we save time and avoid any mis-communications. Is that OK with you? Best wishes.

 Hi there,
A few points please:
1) Our last working day is 9 Feb 2013. So we can start our tour with you on 10 Feb 2013.
2) Hotel Choice: we are happy to use your hotels. But in case you can manage it, we like Popa Mountain Resort (Mt Popa)...
Ayyawaddy River View (Mandalay).... in Bagan please to stay in OLD Bagan, your choice of hotel.
3) We do not need to go Pin Oo Lwyin. We rather have more time to savour Amarapura, Sagaing, teak monastery etc.

Many thanks,

J

Dear Judy,

My friend and I are planning a holiday in Myanmar 10-19 Feb 2013. We will already be in Myanmar, so we only need to arrange tours, internal flights etc. We had been to Inle Lake so it gives us more time to explore Bagan, Mandalay etc. We are not interested in seaside. Please forward some ideas and the cost? thanks.

I would also arrange my visa through you (I am Singaporean) My friend will take care of her own visa.

Thanks,

TIPS FOR PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS

Please plan an itinerary by doing research for customised tours. It is difficult and confusing for Myanmar agents to give various quotations for various tour places to visit in a period of booming tourism.  There is a need to phone up hotels for vacancies and get quotations from other service providers as customised tours need a lot of administrative work as compared to packaged tours.

An example of a prospect asking for various options is shown below:

-------------------------------------------
Yesterday, Oct 29, 2012 I was at Khin Khin's office. Her accountant planned to go to Myanmar from Dec 8 to 16, 2012. She had already booked a hotel in Monywa for 4 days to visit the domestic worker's neighbourhood.

"Nothing to do, nothing to see," Khin Khin said to her over the phone. "So dusty. You want to spend 4 days in Monywa. What for?"

To me she said: "So stupid. Why visit the maid's home town for 4 days?"

"To you, Monywa is not the place to visit, but to Singaporeans who love the rural areas, the farms, the cattle, the pigs, Monywa may be a very interesting place to visit," I knew Khin Khin is from the middle class of Myanmar and would understand. "I enjoyed very much my visit to Myitkyina and the 8-hour bumpy car ride to the country side to visit the big Lake. To appreciate the culture and see how the locals live."

Not all Singaporeans enjoy such tours to the rural areas as there may be lacking good toilet facilities. So Khin Khin is more like the city dweller Singaporean now. I have not been to Monywa but it is not that near to Mandalay.

"Give what your accountant what," I said as Khin Khin offered to arrange the Golden Rock visit for her. The accountant had booked online a hotel in Monywa for 4 days and now she thought she should cut down to 3 days.

"Get my neighbours 2 maids," the accountant said over the phone.
"I will try," Khin Khin said. "The Myanmar government does not permit anyone to employ Myanmar women as maids. I will be sent to the jail for 5 years if I do it for your friends."
"But you a licensed employment agent," the accountant phoned back. "Surely, I am referring business to you. My neighbours are in urgent need of Myanmar maids."

Nowadays, Indonesian maid supply had shrunk as the Indonesian government controlled the intake of maids by wanting the maids to get a loan through the government and that the employer is required to pay more. The costs of hiring an Indonesian maid had shot up and so Myanmar maids are in demand. However, the supply is very short.

"Why do you take so much trouble to explain to your accountant that your government will jail you for 5 years

Thanks,

Thank you for your email. I am David Sing.

I do customised tours, not packaged tours to Myanmar for the time being as Myanmar packaged tours for Singaporeans are not well developed yet, to fit into the relatively high expectations of Singaporeans.

Examples of prices on customised travel to Myanmar are available at www,designtravelpl.com and the blog associated with this website. Please choose one tour and let me know the dates you wish to travel, no. of bedrooms, hotel quality and tour guide.

I don't do Cambodia tours for the time being as numerous Singapore travel agencies do packaged tours to Cambodia as advertised in the Straits Times.

Pl phone me at 9668 6468 if you want more info or email to me. Best wishes.

HOTELS
We are OK with 3 star hotels or guesthouse (but of course 4 star would be lovely) In fact I have done quite extensive research and have preferred guesthouses. But I know it may be easier for you to arrange everything.
We want to have double room please i.e. one bed!

GUIDE: We are happy to do free and easy .... but for certain places which the guide can explain history, background well, we are happy to use local guide. The xtra cost would be worth, we think.

FLIGHTS
No need international flights. In my email, I said we would already be in Myanmar (we have a work project in Myanmar before 10 Feb) WITHIN Myanmar, we prefer flights to save time. Myanmar roads are not so good & we are short of time. The only request: if we have time can we take the local boat between Mandalay-Bagan? which leaves at 6am?

thanks,

Please forward some ideas and the cost? thanks.

I would also arrange my visa through you (I am Singaporean) My friend will take care of her own visa.

Hi

I am David Sing replying on behalf of Judy. Thank you for your email. For your 9 days/8 nights Feb 10-19 2003 holiday in Myanmar, I will recommend the following:

Feb 10, 2013 Yangon overnight

Feb 11 Yangon to Golden Rock. Golden Rock overnight.

Feb 12 Golden Rock and visit to surrounding towns. Yangon overnight.

Feb 13 Morning flight to Bagan. Bagan overnight.

Feb 16 Mandalay. Mandalay to Pyin Oo Lwin by car. Pyin Oo Lwin overnight.

Feb 17 Pyin Oo Lwin. Afternoon. Pyin Oo Lwin to Mandalay. Mandalay overnight

Feb 18 Mandalay to Yangon by domestic flight. Yangon overnight

Feb 19 Yangon and surrounding area tour if there is time. Back to Singapore

Pl check out the following websites for more info on Pyin Oo Lwin which I find very interesting for its British colonial and military history and climate. Travel by domestic airlines is recommended to save time as distances between towns are far. Pl let me know if you just want travel by car e.g. Mandalay to Yangon.

The above tour will give you some of the most interesting places in Myanmar. To quote you, I need to know what type of hotel accommodation you require (e.g. 3-star hotel or 4-star and above), one-bedroom with two twin beds, food on your own, tour guide or no tour guide, your budget per person excluding international flights and meals.

Once you have decided what you want, then I will get the quotation. Thank you and best wishes.

EMAIL REPLY DATED OCT 23, 2012

Thank you for your reply. Regarding the night you arrive in Yangon, l was under the impression you have booked your hotel.

If not, please let me know. Please review the itinerary again as regards hotels and give me your itinerary plan so that we can finalise it. For example, if you want to stay in the same hotel, let us know as Bagan is in great demand by European tourists. Once you let me know your itinerary and accommodation, we will finalise it as time is short.

EMAIL REPLY DATED OCT 23, 2012

Hi
The prices stated in the webpage at:
http://myantour09.blogspot.sg/2012/09/blog-post.html
is the lowest possible for the Christmas period which is a peak tourist season. Domestic airfares are expensive as there are no budget airlines in Myanmar. There are the 3 famous Bagan, Mount Popa and Inle Lake places to visit. The quotation is very competitive. I am sorry that there cannot be any discount for Senior Citizens but I can check whether 3 persons to a room will be more economical and let you know once you are interested. Pl let me know early if you are interested as prices are subject to changes in November and December. Best wishes.

95. INFO FOR CLIENTS: Handing over of domestic airline tickets at Yangon

As domestic airline tickets can get lost during transit from Yangon to Singapore and it costs money to courier the tickets, Design Travel's Myanmar travel agent will hand over the ticket on arrival of Singaporean residents at Yangon airport.

Domestic airline tickets will be issued only 7 days before flight unlike in Singapore. This is the way the system works in Yangon. Pl note that the process of issuing e-tickets does not exist presently for domestic airlines in Yangon and therefore, some of you may need Design Travel or your agent to get the air tickets for you.

E-MAIL REPLY FROM DESIGN TRAVEL DATED OCT 8, 2012

I am David Sing from Design Travel. We can do the hotel and domestic airline bookings for you.

Please provide us with your time and dates of arrival and departure to Bagan, Inle, Kalaw and Mrauk + Ngapali and I will give you the quotation.

Your budget of US$1,000/pax will not be sufficient for so many places as domestic airfares are around US$150. Accommodation will be 3-star hotel with your budget.

Let me know the exact dates of your travel for each city/town so that I can get the flight times fo you. Travel by bus, boat or train from Yangon to Bagan takes many hours compared to air travel and so the itinerary depends more on you than on me.

There are some examples of costs involved in tour to Myanmar. Pl goto www.designtravelpl.com and goto 'BLOGS". Proper planning by you is important and once you have decided on the dates of travel, please do NOT keep changing your minds as it is very difficult to do any booking for your group since many towns/cities are involved in your visit and much administrative work is needed to do the booking of airlines and hotels.

Myanmar travel and tours are much more complex and expensive than those to Thailand and so, proper planning and costing are required. The demand for hotels nowadays is extremely high and an increase in tourism and business tourism has shot upwards and so hotels are in short supply since not many were built during the past years when most of the Western tourists were French and some Europeans.

I thank you for your understanding on my advice to get a proper plannning of the dates and times of arrival and departure by yourself first and then I will review and let you know whether it is practical.

91. UPDATE Oct 5, 2012. Travel and tours to Myanmar

Oct 5, 2012
INFORMATION TO PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS OF DESIGN TRAVEL

Please note that Myanmar is extremely popular with tourists and business people from Singapore and other parts of the world nowadays as compared to two years ago.

Landlords and hotel operators no longer need to worry about the lack of tenants or guests. Now, landlords of offices will rent only for one-year lease and get the full yearly payment in advance.

Here are the real cases of the economic and tourism boom

1. An office space of 3500 sq ft in prime Yangon location has been rented at US$80,000 per year. 8 serviced offices are available for business people.  Another landlord wants S$6,600/month for a 1700 sq ft office.

2. A Myanmar resident told me her bungalow of 4400 sq ft in a good area can sell for around $440,000. This is $1,000/sq. ft. She had a person from Singapore and Malaysia keen on developing hotels and is looking for land owners to do joint venture. If she builds her hotel, the construction cost is said to be around $700,000 for a 50-room 6-storey hotel. There are more foreign investors and developers than there are local residents to joint-venture. Some want to set up construction worker training schools with locals. Others want to start businesses.

In this situation, prospective tourists need to plan ahead if they want to tour Myanmar. In Singapore, tour agencies can take 50% of the cost and then wait 2 months later to take the balance. However, for Myanmar, hotels do not reserve the rooms 2 months in advance without any deposit. So, it is best to buy travel insurance and plan ahead. Singaporeans need visas to travel to Myanmar and this takes around seven working days.
